Batak Lake

Complete guide to fishing, recreation and nature in the Western Rhodopes

Batak Lake — One of Bulgaria's Most Beautiful Lakes

Batak Lake is the third largest reservoir in Bulgaria and one of the most picturesque spots in the Western Rhodopes. Situated at about 1,100 m altitude, the lake stretches approximately 10 km in length and up to 2.8 km in width, holding around 310 million cubic meters of water. It lies just 4 km from the town of Batak and about 1 km from Family Hotel Stoyan in Tsigov Chark — a 12-minute walk or 3-minute drive.

Built in the 1940s as part of the Batak hydroelectric cascade, the reservoir has since become one of Bulgaria's most popular destinations for recreation, fishing, and water sports. The water is clean, the shores are lined with coniferous forests, and the tranquility here is hard to find elsewhere.

Fishing at Batak Lake

Batak Lake is one of Bulgaria's top fishing destinations. You can fish here year-round, and the variety of species attracts both beginners and experienced anglers from across the country.

Fish Species

Carp

The most sought-after species in the lake. Found in large specimens but challenging to catch. Best period: May—October. Boat fishing with pre-baiting at 100—150 m from shore is recommended.

Perch

Found in large numbers. Good for spinning from a boat. Active year-round, especially in early morning hours and at sunset.

Whitefish

A general term for several species — bleak, mullet, and others. Abundant and easy to catch with a float.

Bream

Found in shallower parts of the lake, especially in bays. Good catch periods: spring and autumn.

Rudd

Beautiful fish with distinctive red fins. Inhabits shallow coastal zones.

Crucian carp

Predatory fish suitable for spinning. Found in deeper areas.

Catfish

Less common but present. Caught on bottom rigs with live bait or wobbler.

Silver carp and grass carp

Stocked species found in larger sizes. Silver carp can reach impressive dimensions.

Permits and Licenses

Fishing at Batak Lake requires a valid annual fishing license from IARA (Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture). Licenses can be purchased:

  • Online through the IARA website — iara.government.bg
  • Through the iap.bg platform
  • At local fishing supply shops in Batak
  • At kiosks around the lake

  • Early morning and late afternoon give the best results
  • The bottom is rocky with algae — be careful with bottom rigs
  • Bring warm clothing even in summer — mornings by the water are cool
  • Bring your own food and drinks — there are no cafes around the lake

  • Don't leave waste — the lake is in a protected natural area

History of the Lake

Batak Lake was built in the 1940s as part of the Batak hydroelectric cascade. The dam wall is a stone-fill structure 48 m high. Its original purpose was electricity generation, but over the decades it has become one of the most important recreation areas in the Western Rhodopes.

The town of Batak, after which the lake is named, has a long and tragic history. During the April Uprising of 1876, thousands of Bulgarians perished here — an event known as the Batak Massacre. The St. Nedelya Church Ossuary in the town center preserves the memory of these victims and is one of the most visited historical monuments in the region.
